Selecting a grain mill is the biggest step toward total control over your brew day. it allows you to buy grain in bulk, ensure maximum freshness, and dial in your efficiency based on your specific brewing system.

Here is a breakdown of our grain mill options.

1. MaltMuncher Series (Value & Performance)

The MaltMuncher line features cold-rolled steel rollers. These are incredibly durable and provide a professional-grade crush at an entry-level price point.

  • MaltMuncher 2-Roller: * The Build: Two adjustable rollers and a 6 lb hopper.

    • Best For: The budget-conscious brewer moving into all-grain.

    • Pro Tip: This mill is easily powered by a standard 3/8" power drill, making manual hand-cranking optional.

  • MaltMuncher 3-Roller: * The Build: Three rollers and a massive 11 lb hopper.

    • Best For: Brewers doing larger batches (10+ gallons) who want a "one-pass" perfect crush.

    • The Advantage: The top two rollers act as a "pre-crush," while the third roller performs the final grind, ensuring no small kernels slip through.

2. Mighty Mill Series (Stainless & Premium)

The Mighty Mill is an upgrade in materials. It features 304 Stainless Steel rollers, which are essentially rust-proof—a major benefit if you brew in a humid garage or basement.

  • Mighty Mill 2-Roller: * The Build: Two stainless rollers, a 7 lb hopper, and an included metal base plate.

    • Best For: Brewers who want a low-maintenance, long-lasting mill that won't corrode over time.

    • The Advantage: The included base fits securely over a standard 5-gallon plastic bucket, making setup instant.

  • Mighty Mill 3-Roller: * The Build: Three stainless rollers, a 7 lb hopper, and premium bearings.

    • Best For: Perfectionists. This mill offers the highest level of efficiency and durability available in a non-motorized home mill.

    • The Advantage: The 3-roller design preserves the grain husk better than a 2-roller mill, which creates a superior filter bed for your mash and prevents "stuck sparges."

3. Professional & High-Volume Options

For those looking for a "Buy Once, Cry Once" solution or a mill for a nanobrewery:

  • Ss Brewtech Grain Mill: Features large, fluted 4" rollers and an integrated high-torque DC motor. It shears the grain rather than crushing it, offering unparalleled precision.

  • MoreBeer! UltiMill: A heavy-duty, motor-driven beast with a 60 lb hopper. Designed for high-volume production with an explosion-proof motor for maximum safety.

How to Dial in Your Gap

Once you choose your mill, you need to set the "gap" (the distance between rollers). Use a set of feeler gauges for accuracy:

  • Standard Systems: 0.035" is the sweet spot for a good balance of efficiency and flow.

  • Feeler Gauge Accuracy: As malt varies from supplier to supplier and year to year, testing a small handful of grain and resetting the gap each brew day will provide the most consistent results.

  • BIAB (Brew In A Bag): You can go tighter (0.025") because you don't need to worry about a stuck sparge.

Maintenance Tip: Always keep your rollers dry. If using a steel-roller mill (MaltMuncher), a quick wipe with a light food-grade oil after a long period of non-use can prevent surface rust.
