The Speidel Braumeister is a world-class, all-in-one electric brewing system. Because it is engineered in Germany, some of the connections require a bit of "Americanization" to work with your local hardware. Use this guide to ensure you have everything you need before your first brew day.

1. Power Requirements: 110V vs. 230V

We offer models for both standard and high-voltage power. Check your specific model before planning your electrical setup:

  • 20L Braumeister (110V): This model comes with a standard NEMA 5-20 plug. Ensure you are plugging into a 20-amp circuit (usually found in kitchens or garages) for optimal performance.

  • 50L & 200L Braumeisters (230V): These higher-capacity units require a 230V connection.

    • The Plug: These units often ship with bare wires or European plugs. You will need to wire on a US-compatible plug (like a NEMA 6-20P) to match your outlet.

    • The Circuit: We recommend hiring an electrician to install a dedicated 230V outlet with at least a 16-amp breaker for the 50L model.

2. The Cooling Jacket: Garden Hose Connections

The Braumeister PLUS models feature a welded-on cooling jacket. The manual lists the threads as 1" G (BSPP), which can be hard to find at a local US hardware store. However, the unit includes 1" G-to-Gardena male QD posts already installed.

How to connect to your hose: Don't search the plumbing aisle for "G-threads." Instead, head to the Garden/Irrigation aisle and look for Gardena Quick Connects.

  • What to buy: A "Gardena Hose Starter Set" or (2) Gardena Female Quick-Connect to 3/4" GHT adapters.

  • Setup: One side screws onto your garden hose, the other clicks onto the Braumeister post.

  • Pro Tip: Always connect your cold water to the bottom port and your drain hose to the top port. This ensures the jacket fills completely for maximum cooling efficiency.

3. Tubing & Drainage: Getting the Right Size

Connecting transfer tubing: Most Speidel accessories will accommodate 1/2" ID tubing.

  • For the Stainless Spigot (Drain): Use 1/2" ID Silicone Tubing. It is heat-resistant (essential for hot wort), flexible, and won't "kink" as easily as vinyl when it gets warm.

  • For the 50L+ Models: If you are upgrading to a larger ball valve, check your specific barb size, but 90% of Braumeister accessories are built for 1/2" ID lines.

4. Essential Assembly & "Lost" Parts

  • Malt Pipe Gasket: The large white silicone gasket must be seated firmly at the bottom of the malt pipe. If this isn't flush, grain will bypass the pipe and potentially clog your pump.

  • The Spigot: Install the stainless spigot with the provided gaskets. Hand-tighten firmly. If you use a wrench, go easy, over-tightening can "mushroom" the gasket and cause a leak.

  • Screen Plates: The fine mesh screen goes on the bottom, followed by the coarser plate on top of the grain bill, secured by the crossbar and wing nut.

5. Software & MySpeidel (WiFi Models)

Newer Braumeisters feature integrated WiFi.

  • Syncing: Register your unit at MySpeidel.com. You can create recipes on your computer or tablet and sync them wirelessly to your Braumeister controller.

  • Firmware: Always check for a firmware update upon unboxing. Speidel regularly releases updates that improve pump pressure and temperature accuracy.

5. Cleaning: The "First Run"

Your Braumeister is a precision instrument, but it may have residual manufacturing oils.

  1. Fill with water and 1-2 oz of PBW.

  2. Set the temperature to 140°F (60°C) and let the pump circulate for 20 minutes.

  3. Drain and rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
