Preserve Aroma and Eliminate Oxidation in Every Batch
Oxidation is the ultimate enemy of the hop-forward beer. Even a split second of exposure to air during dry hopping can turn a vibrant NEIPA into a dull, cardboard-flavored disappointment.
For FermZilla users, the Hop Bong is the professional-grade solution to this problem. It allows you to introduce hops into a pressurized environment without letting a single molecule of oxygen touch your beer.
Why Use a Hop Bong?
Zero Oxygen Pickup: By purging the "Bong" with CO2 before dropping the hops, you ensure only inert gas enters the fermenter.
Maintain Pressure: You don’t have to de-pressurize your FermZilla. This keeps your carbonation intact and prevents "krausen volcanoes" caused by sudden pressure drops.
Better Aroma: Because the delicate hop oils aren't oxidizing, the finished beer retains that "just-packaged" punchy aroma for much longer.
Step-by-Step: The Oxygen-Free Dry Hop
Isolate the Vessel: Ensure the 2" Butterfly Valve at the top of your FermZilla lid is closed.
Load the Hops: Remove the top Tri-Clamp cap of the Hop Bong and pour in your hop pellets.
Seal and Pressurize: Re-attach the top cap and clamp. Connect your CO2 gas line to the Carbonation Cap on the side of the Hop Bong.
The Purge: Set your regulator to 10-15 PSI. Pressurize the Hop Bong, then pull the PRV (Pressure Relief Valve) on the top cap. Repeat this 3 to 5 times. This "dilution purging" ensures any trapped air is replaced by CO2.
Equalize and Drop: Ensure the pressure inside the Hop Bong is equal to (or slightly higher than) the pressure inside the FermZilla. Open the Butterfly Valve. The hops will drop straight into the beer.
Seal Up: Close the Butterfly Valve, disconnect your gas, and depressurize the Hop Bong. You're done!
Essential FermZilla Accessories for Success
| Accessory | Why You Need It |
| 2" Butterfly Valve | The gatekeeper that allows you to swap or purge the Hop Bong without opening the fermenter. |
| Carbonation Caps | Essential for connecting your gas line to the Hop Bong for the purging process. |
| Stainless Steel Float | Pair this with a Floating Dip Tube to ensure you're drawing clear beer from above the hop pile after the drop. |
| Pressure Kit | You'll need the stainless steel posts and PRV to properly manage the $CO_2$ during the purge. |
The Verdict: Is it Worth It?
If you are brewing Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, or Pale Ales, the Hop Bong isn't just a "nice-to-have"-it's a necessity for professional results. It bridges the gap between homebrewing and commercial cellar practices.
Pro-Tip: If your hops get "hung up" in the valve, don't panic. Gently toggle the butterfly valve handle back and forth or give the side of the Hop Bong a firm tap. The CO2 pressure behind the hops will eventually win the battle!
