Whether you’re looking to brew a quick experimental batch or stocking up for a party, our recipe kits are designed to be flexible. Here is everything you need to know about adjusting your volumes and managing your ingredients.

Understanding "Listed Volume"

When you see a volume listed on a MoreBeer! kit, that number represents the final amount of beer intended to go into your bottles or keg after fermentation is complete. We calculate our ingredient portions to ensure you hit that target yield.

Adjusting Your Batch Size

You aren't strictly locked into the kit's default size. If you want to change things up, here is how to do it:

  • Brewing a "Half Batch": Simply use half of the included ingredients. For the best results with partial batches, we recommend using Dried Malt Extract (DME) or All-Grain brewing methods, as they are easier to divide accurately.

  • Brewing a "Double Batch": Just double the ingredients! You can achieve this by:

    • Purchasing two of the same kit.

    • Buying individual ingredients in larger bulk volumes.

    • Getting creative by combining two different recipe kits or ingredient sets

Managing Yeast for Partial Batches

Dividing yeast can be a bit tricky. If you aren't using a full package, keep these tips in mind to keep your fermentation healthy:

  • Go Dry: We highly recommend Cellar Science Dried Yeast for partial batches. It is significantly easier to measure by weight or volume compared to liquid yeast.

  • Sanitize Everything: This is the golden rule! Any equipment that touches your yeast—such as measuring spoons or scale cups—must be sanitized before use.

  • Storage: You can store opened dried yeast safely. Place the remaining yeast in a sealed bag and store it in your refrigerator. For the best performance, ensure you use it within 6 months of opening.

Brewing Tip: While scaling is simple math, remember that your boil-off rate might stay the same even if your batch size changes. Keep an eye on your water levels to ensure your gravity stays on target!
